Palm Sunday: The Lord's Entrance into Jerusalem
PALM SUNDAY
ACCORDING TO THE
BYZANTINE RITE TRADITION
The triumphant entry of Jesus into the city of Jerusalem before His passion,
was celebrated with particular solemnity since the first centuries of
Christianity. In the Byzantine Rite it is considered to this day one of the
twelve Major Feasts of the liturgical year. It is always celebrated
on the Sunday before Easter with the blessing of branches. In liturgical
books the feast is referred to as Palm Sunday or Vaj Sunday
(Gr. balon—palm branch) for, on that Sunday, palm-branches were
blessed and distributed to the faithful. Popularly it was also called
Willow Sunday (Verbna Ned’ilja) because in Europe, pussy-willows were
blessed instead of palms. It is also known as Flower Sunday (Kvitna
Nedilja) since in and near Constantinople they used to distribute early
spring flowers, such as branches of lilac or elder, to the faithful.

Народ бачить Його своїм Царем, проте наш Cпаситель свідомий,
що за кілька днів ті ж самі люди будуть знущатися, бити, плювати на Нього і розіп’нуть.
До якої групи народу належимо ми? Застановімся і подумаймо,
як ми поступили б в цих годинах страшної конфронтації.
Cкільки разів ми, християни, вітаємо Iсуса Xриста,
а скільки разів ми засуджуємо Xриста.

Dear Parishioners!
I would like to share with you, dear Parishioners, few thought of today’s feast.
Jesus Christ enters through the gates of Jerusalem like a king and greatest prophet.
The people welcome Him as a King, and after few days in Jerusalem He is tortured,
beaten and spit up and finally the masses of people welcome His punishment on the Cross for our salvation.
To what group of people do we belong?
This last week of lent can be for us a time of meditation. Think and meditate.
How many times our behavior is similar to the masses of that time!
How many times we are switching our judgment without any remorse.
How many times our good deeds we destroy by changing our behavior?

* Dear Parents, Once again, St Josaphat Cathedral is hosting Summer Day Camp for children 3-8 years old! The camp runs July 3-13, 2011, Mon-Fri, 9:00-3:00 (with the possibility of early drop-off and late pick-up*) in the church auditorium. This summer children will focus on Jesus’ childhood, “Hometown Nazareth: Where Jesus Was a Kid”, and through hands-on activities and spiritual guidance will learn about God’s tender care and everlasting love.
