The Classification of Feasts

According to their point of view, feasts may be divided into several classes:

Objects of the Feasts: Feasts are divided into feasts of our Lord, feasts of His Mother, and feasts of the saints following the order of the liturgical year. Feasts are either movable or immovable.  Moveable feast days depend on Easter.  Immovable feasts are those which are celebrated every year on the same day of the month.

The following are Immovable Feasts.

The Feasts of our Lord:

September 14 – the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

December 25 – The Nativity of our Lord (Christmas)

January 1 – the circumcision of our Lord

January 6 – the Epiphany (the Baptism of our Lord)

February 2 – the Presentation of our Lord

Palm Sunday – the triumphal Entrance of our Lord into Jerusalem

Good Friday – the Death of our Lord

Easter Sunday – the Resurrection of our Lord

Ascension Day – the Ascension of our Lord into Heaven

Pentecost Sunday – The Descent of the Holy Spirit

August 6 – The Transfiguration of our Lord

The Feasts of the Mother of God are:

September 8 – the Nativity of the Mother of God

October 1 – the Patronage of the Mother of God

November 21 – the Entrance of the Mother of God into the Temple

December 9 – the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of God

December 26 – The Synaxis of the Mother of God

March 25 – The Annunciation of the Mother of God

August 15 – The Assumption to the Mother of God

The Feasts of the saints of:

November 8 – the Feast of St. Michael

November 12 – The Feast of St. Josaphat of Polotsk

December 6 – The Feast of St. Nicholas

December 27 – The Feast of St. Stephen, the Protomartyr

January 1 – the Feast of St. Basil the Great

January 30 – the Feasts of the Three Holy Hierarchs

April 23 – the Feast of St. George, the Great Martyr

June 24 – the Nativity of St. John the Baptist

June 29 – the Feasts of Saints Peter and Paul

July 20 – the Feast of the Prophet Elias

August 29 – The Beheading of St. john the Baptist
